Text
The generation of men
IN this book, Judith Wright, the well-known Australian poet, tells the story of her forebears in Australia, who were pioneers of the wine-growing and cattle-raising industries in New South Wales and Queensland. The names, dates and events are factual and are based on diaries, letters and personal reminiscences, but the author has given us something more than a conventional biography.
Using a narrative form, she has, out of an intimate knowledge of her subject, a disciplined imagination and a fine sensibility to people and landscape, recon-structed the past, so as to give us an insight into the hearts and minds of the people of whom she writes, as well as the record of outward events. In doing so she has achieved a universality and emotional depth seldom found in con-ventional biography
